Ripple USD has gained a significant new distribution channel. Coinbase now supports RLUSD across its consumer application, exchange services and Prime institutional platform, expanding access to a stablecoin originally launched in December 2024.

The change matters because access to an asset is not determined only by the blockchain on which it exists. Investors, payment providers and businesses also depend on exchanges, custody services and settlement infrastructure that fit their operating requirements.

The October 28 announcement provides those connections through Coinbase, although availability remains subject to supported regions and customer eligibility.

RLUSD is live on three Coinbase services

Coinbase confirms that RLUSD is available through its retail application, Coinbase Exchange and Coinbase Prime.

Eligible users can trade and manage the stablecoin through the supported services. The companies also advertise one-to-one conversion from U.S. dollars into RLUSD, along with support for conversions involving other eligible dollar-denominated stablecoins.

The announcements do not provide a complete list of trading pairs, detailed conversion spreads or all applicable fees.

A one-to-one conversion offer should therefore not be interpreted as a guarantee that every operation on every service is free of charges.

For institutional clients, the integration reduces the need to move between separate platforms when managing liquidity, executing transactions and holding the asset.

Coinbase Prime combines several functions relevant to professional market participants, including trading and custody. Adding RLUSD expands the range of supported instruments within that infrastructure.

However, the listing does not establish the amount of liquidity that will be available under different market conditions. Nor does it guarantee that RLUSD will immediately achieve trading volumes comparable to more established stablecoins.

Ethereum, Base and XRP Ledger support deposits and withdrawals

Coinbase is supporting RLUSD transfers across three blockchain networks: Ethereum, Base and XRP Ledger.

Ethereum provides access to a broad ecosystem of decentralized applications and financial services. Base, developed by Coinbase, operates as an Ethereum layer-two network. XRP Ledger is the blockchain closely associated with Ripple's existing payments infrastructure.

The ability to use multiple networks can make RLUSD more flexible for customers whose assets and applications are spread across different ecosystems.

It also requires careful network selection. Sending tokens through a blockchain that the receiving platform does not support may lead to lost funds or complicated recovery procedures.

Network compatibility should be verified independently for every destination, even when the sending exchange supports several chains.

Transaction costs and settlement times can differ between networks. The most suitable option depends on the recipient, the transfer amount and the conditions prevailing when the transaction is executed.

Ripple also plans to provide liquidity on Base to support RLUSD adoption. The announcement does not specify a funding commitment or identify every protocol that may receive that liquidity.

RLUSD targets the dollar, not the price of XRP

RLUSD is a fiat-backed stablecoin designed to maintain a value close to one U.S. dollar per token.

Ripple describes the asset as redeemable for dollars and backed by reserves including U.S. dollar deposits, short-term U.S. Treasury securities and other cash equivalents.

It is important to distinguish RLUSD from XRP. The two assets have different economic purposes even when transactions occur on XRP Ledger.

XRP has a market-driven price. RLUSD is designed around a dollar-denominated redemption and reserve structure.

That structure is intended to support a stable price, but it does not eliminate risk.

A stablecoin's market value can temporarily deviate from its intended peg. Redemption rights, reserve management, operational controls and counterparty exposure remain relevant to users.

Holding a stablecoin should not automatically be treated as equivalent to holding insured bank deposits.

Market capitalization has exceeded $2.4 billion

Ripple reports that RLUSD has surpassed $2.4 billion in market capitalization since its December 2024 launch.

Other market information published around the Coinbase announcement placed the figure above $2.5 billion, including estimates cited by Reuters and industry publications.

These measurements can differ because circulating supply changes and data providers may update their estimates at different times.

The growth illustrates increasing distribution of RLUSD, although it remains considerably smaller than the largest dollar-backed stablecoins.

Market capitalization should also be distinguished from daily trading volume, payment adoption and institutional settlement activity.

A large amount of tokens in circulation does not necessarily mean the same amount is being used for commercial payments.

Coinbase Global Exchange collateral support is still coming

One of the most consequential institutional features remains a future development.

Ripple and Coinbase plan to make RLUSD available to Coinbase Global Exchange customers, including the possibility of using the stablecoin as collateral.

Collateral is used to support financial obligations and trading positions under the platform's applicable margin and risk-management rules.

That creates a different use case from simply converting dollars into stablecoins or transferring tokens between wallets.

Using RLUSD as collateral could extend its role in derivatives trading and institutional market operations, but the partners have not disclosed the specific products, collateral requirements or implementation date.

The announced plan should not be presented as a feature that every Global Exchange customer can already use.

Coinbase is expanding beyond its longstanding USDC focus

Coinbase has historically maintained a particularly close relationship with USDC, the stablecoin associated with Circle.

Its broader catalog now includes other dollar-backed instruments. Reuters notes that Coinbase has also expanded access to stablecoins such as PayPal's PYUSD.

Adding RLUSD reinforces Coinbase's position as a platform hosting multiple stablecoin issuers rather than relying exclusively on one dollar-denominated asset.

For professional customers, that can provide additional choices in settlement, custody and liquidity management.

However, not all dollar stablecoins are interchangeable from a risk perspective. Differences in issuers, reserves, redemption arrangements, jurisdictions and supported networks can be material.

Users comparing these instruments should consider those characteristics alongside liquidity and transaction costs.

Ripple is building a broader institutional infrastructure

The Coinbase announcement follows a series of developments involving Ripple's institutional operations.

The company has also reported final approval from the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency to establish Ripple National Trust Bank.

The structure is intended to support activities including the management of RLUSD reserves and digital asset custody.

A national trust bank charter is distinct from a conventional commercial banking license. It does not automatically authorize the full range of deposit-taking and lending activities performed by traditional banks.

Ripple is combining its stablecoin strategy with payments, custody, treasury management and institutional brokerage services.

Access through Coinbase provides a distribution channel that complements those existing activities.

It may also make RLUSD easier to integrate into institutional workflows, although the announcement does not disclose specific transaction volumes or guaranteed customer adoption resulting from the partnership.

The launch is real, but its market impact remains to be demonstrated

The central availability claim is established: eligible Coinbase customers can access RLUSD through the platform's retail, exchange and Prime offerings beginning October 28, 2026.

Deposits and withdrawals are supported on Ethereum, Base and XRP Ledger, while additional Global Exchange functionality remains planned.

The next useful measures will be actual trading volume, liquidity across supported networks, conversion costs and the degree to which enterprises use RLUSD for payments or settlement.

International availability is another open issue. The U.S.-focused announcement and Coinbase's reference to supported regions do not establish identical access in every jurisdiction.

The partnership expands RLUSD distribution, but whether it substantially changes competition among dollar stablecoins will depend on sustained adoption rather than the listing announcement alone.
